Grandma . . .

I am babysitting my granddaughters this weekend while their parents get away for some much-needed alone time. This is the first time they have stayed with me and I wasn't sure how they would react to being left with me. The oldest, at the grand old age of 7 1/2, is a delight and very eager to help out. Her little sister, not quite 3, is a ball of fire--complete with flaming red hair.

So far, we have watched a lot of "SpongeBob", gone to the store to get kid food, taken baths, played in the yard, colored the porch with chalk, and taken turns with Grandma's piano.

Bedtime last night was touch and go. Makayla, the oldest, was ready for sleep. Hailey went down fine but it only lasted about 10 minutes. She came back out to the front room rather upset, saying she wanted me. She snuggled into my lap and we sat there looking at family pictures on my laptop, her big sister naming all the people in each picture. Hailey fell asleep on my lap and then I had to figure out how to get off the "people-eating-couch" with a large toddler in my arms. I slid her onto the floor, struggled off the couch, picked her up and took her back to bed where they both slept all night. I was very touched that this little girl, who doesn't spend a lot of time around me, felt that she could come to me for comfort.

We're now planning what to do for lunch and making a trip to the park.

Ahh, the joys of caring for the young.
