Chipmunks - Friend or Foe

They're so cute! They don't look like mice or rats, although are mid-sized between them. They don't look like squirrels, although they have bushy little tails! They don't look like skunks, although they have stripes. They don't look like cats, although they are curious. Actually, they look a little like a hampster, with a bushy short tail and two stripes down their backs.

They're a little nervous, but very curious and for a peanut, they'll climb up your pant leg, across your body, down your arm and onto the picnic table to get one. They love to check out every nook and cranny that they can find like: drainage tubes attached to eaves troughs; bags of peat moss, or mulch, in the garden shed; even your vehicle, under the wheel wells and I even saw one travel up the exhaust pipe! Luckily it came back out.

Oh yes, they're cute and many people have a hard time not feeding them because they are so cute. But, they are as much nuisance as squirrels, mice, moles and any other rodents that you can name. They eat plant bulbs, with no care about how hard they were for you to come by or the cost involved! The make beds in your garden supplies, or just steal it to make nests somewhere else. They are ingenious at getting the seed out of the birdfeeders! Yes, I'm guilty of feeding them, but my husband started it!

I had to get a new thermostat for my truck, so I went into the shop and while I was there, I asked the mechanic to price out a tuneup and oil change for me. My truck has been running hot, with the needle for the thermostat yo-yoing from cold to hot, thus the thermostat. Also, it's been very sluggish - no get up and go! If a vehicle could be lathargic or depressed, that's how I would describe it.

If I had known what my eyes would behold, I would have had my camera ready. By the time that I saw it, I was in shock and didn't think of my camera until it was too late. The mechanic opened the breather cover to see what shape my breather was in and we stood in shock to see mulch stuffed around the breather. It was so packed in that it was also going up the intake sleave that's attached to the breather. One chipmunk didn't make it out of the nest when I started the truck last winter - poor little pancake. There will be no more feeding of chipmunks around here, if I have anything to say about it!

Heather, I love your tail. Yes, they are adorable...just yesterday when I was up at the church one came to the front door & stood up as only a chipmunk can do to peek in the door. Oh for a camera! We stood there for about 5 minutes watching one another when I figured I'd better get back to work. He was still standing there when I left. Our dog doesn't like them at all & will dig up the flowers if she thinks there is one in there. So what damage the cute little guy doesn't do, the dog will finish!

Heather, what a great story! Chipmunks are so cute and I used to think I just had to have one for a pet - until I realized that our neighbor's garage is full of them and he shoots them with a bb gun and it just made me so angry - they were in there because he stored pecans and other food items in the cool garage and it was his own fault. I knew that they really were not pet material but I still love watching them romp around my yard - sad to say though, they don't get shot in my yard, but our cats hunt them, so we really don't get to see them romping around here very much -they know about the cats and they have learned to stay away!
