Royal Canada Day
Journaling Reads:
In 2010, we discovered that the Queen was going to be in Ottawa on Canada Day. After much discussion over whether that kind of trip would be too much for the kids, we finally decided in favor of the adventure of trying to see the Queen. On July 1, we were up before the sun and headed down the road. When we arrived in Ottawa the streets were already packed, and the Queen’s arrival was not scheduled for another hour. We joined the anxious throng pressed against a barrier and began our wait. Eventually, we were rewarded with the sight of a tiny person in the distance wearing a red dress and a white hat. After another two hours of standing in the mob, listening to what was supposed to be a sampling of Canada’s most promising musicians, we finally saw the Queen herself on the big screens and heard her address the nation. Then she got into her shiny black car, and we caught a glimpse of her white glove as she waved goodbye to the crowds. For more than three hours, our poor kiddos were smooshed in there with us, rotating between our shoulders and feet. They were real troopers, and maybe when they have children of their own, they will tell the story of the Canada Day when we saw the Queen!
