Great Grandmother Watson's Oatmeal Cookies

I spent some time with my parents this past week. My sister in law stopped by for a visit, wanting to talk to me about preserving some of her family's recipes. We talked about how the family gatherings are usually around food and we can all recall our favorite dishes and who brought them. I helped her see that it is more than the recipe alone she wants to preserve, it's the family connections, the people behind the recipes and the stores they have to tell.

My mom was involved in the discussion... she told me about visiting her own grandmother who always had these oatmeal cookies when she came to visit. She could remember their gardens, the vegetables they raised, the flower beds and rose bushes, helping to feed the chickens...

So this page shares that story... newspaper in the background to represent my grandfather, the newspaper man, the pinks & greens of their kitchen, the chicken wire to remind of the chicken coops, the flowers that seemed to be growing everywhere... and of course the recipe for their oatmeal cookies.

This is absolutely lovely. I think the whole idea and the layout is just wonderful. I have a trifle recipe from my mom that I should do something like this with. Thank you so much for sharing.

This is just beautiful and speaks strongly of lovely memories. What a wonderful job you did using Brandy’s supplies. I love the inclusion of the hand-written recipe (I have a whole file box full of my Mother’s) and the way you included the newspaper in the background to represent your great-grandfather. The small photo of your GGM made to look like a locket was a nice touch, too.

I spy down below, another heritage LO that somehow I’ve missed seeing. Must go take a peek.

These LO’s will make a gorgeous and very meaningful Heritage Scrapbook. The wonderful journaling you did in the description of this one would make a great start-off page.
