Monday was my first day at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and Nick drove me to work since we haven’t gotten the rim on my car tire fixed yet. Our furniture was also delivered on Monday, so we won’t have to sleep on an air mattress anymore! As the week progressed, I realized that the next 6 months at Bascom Palmer will be very challenging and rewarding as well. It is entirely different from any other clinic I have worked in, and I know I will see lots of diseases that I would otherwise only see in a textbook. Luckily, I am not alone, there are around 15 optometry students from schools all over the country working at Bascom Palmer. I think the biggest adjustment for Nick and I this week was the traffic. What should be about a 15-20 minute drive to work often takes me 40 minutes with traffic. With a few late nights this week, I didn’t do much in the evenings except make dinner and start studying for my upcoming boards exam. Friday Nick got my car fixed so I could finally start driving it again. On Saturday Nick and I went to the Buffalo Wild Wings at Dolphin Mall to watch the Hawkeyes football game against Indiana University. Then we took Herky to the dog park, and I took Kinnick on a long run. We went grocery shopping on Sunday and I worked on my poster for the Academy meeting in San Francisco later this month.
