I found out, along with some train enthusiast friends, that "Sir Nigel Gresley" a restored A4 Pacific class steam engine, was making its annual "Christmas White Rose" trip from Cambridge to York.
So, braving the heavy snow we've had, we decided to head to Retford, on the East Coast Main Line, to catch her passing through. When we arrived, Retford station was packed with photographers, and so we decided to go to "Secret Spot A" (actually a pedestrian crossing over the line). Duly blindfolded (even though I was driving, my mad friends permitted me to have "eyeholes" in the blindfold! LOL!) we set off. After negotiating roads that seemed better suited to the third stage of the Swedish Rally, we arrived at the head of a farm track. On leaving the car, my friends advised me it was only 50 yards to the line. So, a mile through knee deep snow later!, we finally arrived at the crossing. Some twenty minutes later,she appeared and we got a sequence of wonderful shots as she steamed through at 85mph. This was the last of a sequence of 7 images. Happy Boys, we began the long trek back up to the car.....after all, its only 50 yards!!
I like the muted colours in this photo, due to low angle of the sun.
