Sir Nigel Gresley

I found out, along with some train enthusiast friends, that "Sir Nigel Gresley" a restored A4 Pacific class steam engine, was making its annual "Christmas White Rose" trip from Cambridge to York.

So, braving the heavy snow we've had, we decided to head to Retford, on the East Coast Main Line, to catch her passing through. When we arrived, Retford station was packed with photographers, and so we decided to go to "Secret Spot A" (actually a pedestrian crossing over the line). Duly blindfolded (even though I was driving, my mad friends permitted me to have "eyeholes" in the blindfold! LOL!) we set off. After negotiating roads that seemed better suited to the third stage of the Swedish Rally, we arrived at the head of a farm track. On leaving the car, my friends advised me it was only 50 yards to the line. So, a mile through knee deep snow later!, we finally arrived at the crossing. Some twenty minutes later, she appeared and we got a sequence of wonderful shots as she steamed through at 85mph. This was the last of a sequence of 7 images. Happy Boys, we began the long trek back up to the car.....after all, its only 50 yards!!

I like the muted colours in this photo, due to low angle of the sun.

It's a great photo. I like the grey & gold colors you used and the season compass is a great touch. Really nice font, too; I'll have to remember that one.

Such a handsome steam engine, I'm glad you captured it! I don't think I've ever seen a working steam engine. I really like the torn map, it adds a sense of adventure.:) Lovely LO.

Great photo! Love the snow flying off the roof as the train moves ahead! I like your color scheme and your journaling looks like a gold-plated plaque on a wall...in other words, very elegant, and apropos to the subject!

Wow, Dave! That's an adventure you won't soon forget! The trek in was part of the experience, I'm sure. This is a wonderful photo, and you've scrapped it really elegantly. I especially like the plaque journaling. Congratulations on making the newsletter! Happy New Year!

This is fabulous, and so is the story; our train-loving family is enjoying it. We're train-chasers too--and managed to get many shots of this train both outbound and returning in a gentler season: http://scrapgirls.com.ipbhost.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images&section=viewimage&img=77436 (left), http://scrapgirls.com.ipbhost.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images&section=viewimage&img=77435 (right) and spread: http://scrapgirls.com.ipbhost.com/index.php?app=gallery&module=images&section=viewimage&img=78854.

Well done; winning the layout contest was well-deserved.

Wow- wonderful photo! It was worth suffering the frostbite that surely followed your trek! - LOL. Seriously, you did a fantastic job scrapping this worthy photo. I love the map, the textures, and the beautifully elegant font you chose. My DH and I also traveled from Cambridge to York this year, but, fortunately, in warm summer weather. Lovely!

What a fabulous photo that is and the story behind it was great. Love the steam coming out of the smoke stack. Great shot. Can you give this poor American gal a little background information on the 'White Christmas Rose'. I've done some searching on the internet, but can't find anything but photos. I know there must be something special about this train.
