I was so thrilled with the way this project came out, I just had to do a layout about it.

Journaling:

This is my first try at felting a knitted item.

Felting causes the fibers of 100% animal fiber to mat

together to form a firm fabric. This technique is often

used for hats, slippers, purses and bags.

I started with a double strand of a 100% wool yarn, casting

on 6 stitches over three double pointed needles

Following the pattern I found on the internet, I increased

at regular intervals to end up with a very large and

misshapen object that sort of resembled a hat.

Have you ever accidentally put a wool sweater into the wash?

Then you know what happens when wool meets hot water and

agitation. You add a couple pairs of jeans to create friction

and in just 10 minutes of agitation, the hat had shrunk down

to fit nicely on my head. I then rinsed it three times in clear

water and squeezed out as much water as I could rolled

up in a thick towel.

I then shaped the hat over a styrofoam wig head and

let it air dry, shaping the brim from time to time. I

knitted an I-cord for trim.

I am so impressed! Both with the layout and the hat! Love this technique, have to try it. Just one question came to my mind - how did you know how large the hat should be before felting? So it fits on your head so nicely after the whole process? ;)

I am impressed also, Pat! I can never get anything I knit or crochet to come out like I want it to - I love your technique of "getting the hat the right size" - I'm not sure I would have thought of that! Great layout showing all of the steps you went through to get your knitted hat to fit. Love it.

What a neat project. I grew up watching my mom knit a lot but unfortunately it wasn't something I learned - I can knit basic stitches but I could never get the 'casting on' process! *sigh* Love your LO, it has a very natural feel.

Very cool. I love the explanation of the felting, and your layout is super. It really caught my eye in the gallery! Great Job! Post us a picture of you wearing your hat when it's all done!

What fun! The hat looks great! The knitted background is the obvious choice (nice color), but I like your embellishments and wordart very much.

Dear Pat,

I was just thinking of you and wondering how you are doing. Then I saw this layout. OK, truly FABULOUS. The hat is amazing and then the way that you documented the steps with your layout is truly inspired. You are so talented on so many levels. Great to see this layout from you.

I hope that all is going well with you and your family.

Thanks for always adding such a bright spot to ScrapGirls.

Great layout! I really love the way your title looks and the way you blurred the background knit under your journaling so that it could be easily read. I'll have to remember that trick to using paper that is a little bit busy when I want to journal over it.

Very cool hat Pat. As it happens, I was just looking at a felting project (slippers) and thinking of giving it a try. I love your layout and details -- all that is missing is a picture of you in the final project. Next layout, right?
