Halfdone - Yosemite
I'm new to digi scrapping and am taking the brushes class. I was trying to play around with some simple brushing to create my background paper. I added some text some drop shadowing around the picture and this is what I came up with. I changed the background color until I found one that I thought made the picture "pop". All in all I was pretty happy but am now learning all kinds of really cool stuff in the brushes class so I can only hope to improve with time and practice.

Your background color does make your photos pop - very nice choice. The photos you chose are very bright and pretty.

My only words of advice: watch your shadows (right now all the designers from my critique are laughing because I am famous for having too dark shadows). If you want the layout to look more realistic, use softer shadows (a warm brown instead of black) and make your shadows smaller. For even better shadows in more colors, you also may want to check out the new shadow tools available in the boutique. As wxchic suggested to me, look at a paper layout and notice how small the shadows are there.

Keep up the good work! Being in the brushes class is the greatest way to learn! ;)

Thanks for the advice on the shadows. I played around with them and went big and dark because I couldn't really see them.....Maybe it's that 40ish thing going on with my eyes :-) I also never thought about changing the shadow color, so I'll need to investigate that.

I like your layout, too, very nice. I just discovered last night that different color shadows on text can give a really nice effect. I was doing a sunny beach layout and used a yellow shadow on orange text. So, I'm going to be experimenting more with shadows, too. I've learned a lot on this site; I love reading all the tips.
