i'm thinking i used too much shadow ... on everything.
does it look too busy?
the 8 smaller photos each represent one of the 8 cities I visited. should i add small text in each saying the city, or leave it as is?

I love your photos and the arrangment. If you want to mention the names of the cities, maybe you could number the photos and then put the names in with the other journaling. There would be space if you made the journaling a bit smaller. I like this just as it is though.
When you resized your image, did you have the following boxes checked, 'Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions and Resample Images? I find if these boxes are not checked, the shadows come out a little bit big on the smaller image. I love this layout.

I totally agree with Belle! I love the arrangement of the photos! Also, on the shadows? Not sure what program you're using, but if it's Photoshop Elements you can change the amount of shading.
On your layers palette, double click on the the little
fx
on the photo layer and it will bring up a properties box for your effects. Play with the sliders till you get the right amount of shading, and then you can apply that to the other layers as well.
