THE LEGEND OF Ros Beiaard

Every ten years there is a Ros Beiaard procession in Dendermonde. That is the town I live in. And Dendermonde is a town in the province Oost-Vlaanderen, in Belgium, Europe.

Ros Beiaard is a folkloristic horse of big dimensions. It differs from the other Ros-Beiaard horses because it is used only once every ten years and because the horse is carried by people. The Ros Beiaard is on UNESCO's list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The Ros Beiaard of Dendermonde is carried through the town every ten years by a guild of bearers, called the 'Pijnders'.

In keeping with the legend, four young brothers from Dendermonde (de Vier Heemskinderen) wearing full armour sit astride the horse. The legend of Ros Beiaard is acted out during the procession. The selection of the four 'Heemskinderen' is difficult, because the criteria are severe: it has to be four consecutive brothers, without a girl in between. They all have to be born in Dendermonde and their parents and grandparents also have to be born in Dendermonde. They have to be between 7 and 21 years old on the day of the procession and they have to live in Dendermonde or one of its suburbs.

I used Brandy Murry's Ephemera Collection, a parchment scroll I once found on the internet somewhere, and Raspberry Road Design's Renaissance and Down Home, and the candlestick is from somebody on Deviantart, but I made the candlelight glow effect myself.

Hope you like this one!

Oh yes and the pictures, they're not mine, I found them on the internet. The one with the horse comes from Wikipedia, the other one I cannot find anymore from what site.

This is stunning! The papers are very rich and gives a sense of times of yore. I like the brushwork of the horse and armoured soldiers. Great photos and word art is really fabulous.

This is brilliant! Loved reading that story! Looked at the photos, read the story again... lol. Those brothers look so proud - what a rare and exciting opportunity! I totally love everything about this page - the colours, the elements and that wonderful candlestick - you did a superb job with the glow! I enjoy looking at your pages - you have lots of clever detailing :-)

What a fascinating tradition! Thank you so much for telling us about it through your wonderful layout. The use of the ancient illustration is a perfect embellishment. Very nicely done, Anja.
