Dad's Army Christmas Card

I found these treasures in a scrapbook my Mom made. My Dad entered WWII as an 18-year-old right after High School. Apparently the soldiers were given this Christmas card to send home from the front in 1944. The center photo is the front of the card - if you look closely, written around the edge are the then-48 states. Along the road to fight the Nazi's are tanks and trucks passing European sites like Westminster Abbey and the Eiffel Tower, amongst others. I'd guess the big "A" represents the Allied Forces and "PEACE ON EARTH" expresses the sentiment of all.

The left photo is the inside of the card and reads:

This year finds us far and wide

In distant lands, both strange and old.

But come what may, the road we ride

Will bring to us our cherished goal.

For our hearts are bridged by our guiding star

The river flows with joys anew

We set aside the jolt and jar

To bring our Christmas joys to you.

And Victory be the coming year with

Third US Army Engineers.

The third photo on the right is note written from my Dad which must have been included in the card. It reads:

Dear Mom,

Just a few lines to wish you a very Merry Christmas with the hope that we'll see the next one together.

Love, Rob

This is not my best layout design-wise, but I was intent on not cropping or covering parts of the card. For this layout I used:

SNU Brush Set - Painted

SG A narrative - Brush AFT

BMU Holiday Magic Collection

Marilyn, your page is just fabulous! I love the vignette photo - what great memories the Christmas card is and I just love the way you've placed everything in this layout. Love the handwritten note and your embellies are just so perfect for this layout - love the simplicity of it, yet it speaks volumes!

Nicely done, my friend!

What an awesome memory to scrap. I have a card my MIL was given from my FIL from the British Navy to send so seeing your wonderful Lo has given me the inspiration to scrap mine.

Wow - another coincidence! I have a card my pop sent home to his mum from the 2nd world war too! It just has a 'few lines' scribbled on it too... and another couple with dried flowers from the Middle East sent home to my Nanna (his then girl friend) and his mum! They are on my list of things to scan so I might copy you and DO it!!! What wonderful memories these old cards are - hard to believe how terrible it must have been, especially when we make them so pretty on layouts... I love your colour scheme here - kinda reminiscent of army in the green but so much prettier - Brandy's Holiday Magic collection suits this beautifully, great page :-) You are really getting the hang of these heritage pages now!!!

This is beautiful, Marilyn! I love the tender and loving way you've presented these memories -- especially how you blended your Dad's photo and the lovely soft colors. Your instincts were right-on about making the cards and the letter and the photo the focal points of the layout. I love this!

What an amazing treasure to have! I love the arrangement...I wouldn't want to cover anything up either. The perals are cute!
