April ATC Favorite Color #2 Cinnabar

April ATC Favorite Color #2 Cinnabar

I love many reds, but my favorite is deep, rich cinnabar, and I have bits of that color around my home. My photos show my cinnabar box and a decoupaged glass dish with a cinnabar border, that seems to glow in the light.
I looked up some info about cinnabar on Wikipedia and learned some interesting facts.
"Cinnabar is the common ore of mercury and has been mined since the Neolithic Age. Turned into a fine powder is often referred to as vermilion. Cinnabar has been used for its color in the New World since the Olmec culture and cinnabar was often used in royal burial chambers during the peak of Maya civilization.
The most popularly known use of cinnabar is in Chinese carved lacquerware. From ancient times vermilion was regarded as the color of life (i.e., blood). Cinnabar provided what we refer to as "China red", coloring Chinese life from the palatial red lacquers to the printing-pastes and a unique red calligraphic ink reserved for Emperors. Chinese Taoists associated vermilion with eternity."
Info is in the exif. TFL!

Lovely card, Diane. Love the post card and emb tucked into the lace border. I appreciate your info, too. As I child I would go to Lake Vermillion and always thought that word meant some shade of blue. I still have to think when the word is used.
