Hurricane Andrew - Left (August 24, 1992)

Today is the 20th Anniversary of Hurricane Andrew. We lived (and still live) about 40 miles north of the eye of the storm, and were blessed to escape with only a broken window pane. My husband's parents weren't so lucky.

Journaling:

Hurricane Andrew made landfall at 5am in Homestead, Florida. The day before was sunny, and I was oblivious; I spent the afternoon sewing.

Our youth group was camping in the Florida Keys until the park rangers made them evacuate. Andrew’s last wind gusts were clocked at 165mph,

just before the gauge broke. My in-laws lost their roof, right down to the plywood, and they never did find their tool shed.

Right: The shopping center where my in-laws shopped, their grocery store, and what was left of Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne.

Wow, Becky - I saw your other page, but now I get to read the explanation. Your journaling is so descriptive and scary, too. So glad you were ok. I really like how you used the notebook for your words and clipped the photos to it and used the weather photo also. Wonderful two page spread.

You are right in the middle of things, weatherwise! Good luck on Isaac. Great page, and I love your journaling. Even up here in Va, we have lost part of our roof in hurricanes in the past.

Gosh, how I remember Andrew! <Shuddering> We lived down by Univ of Miami! Will never forget that, and praying for you guys with Isaac! I love your LOs--look how far we've come even since Wilma in 2005! Shows that people are AWESOME at bonding together in the aftermath!

Amazing, the destruction! The weather map really caught my eye. What a great idea to use it here. Awesome photo of the hurricane - I hope you weren't out in the storm taking it.

Another great hurricane page! This is good to document things like this I was in the disaster team back in the 1980's and remember well the destruction that can happen. I really like your using the weather maps, and with the journaling, it really captures the time.
