Celebrating the day when we got together with my cousins and their children; 3 of the children were born within a year of each other so it was good to get a second generation interacting.

Journalling:

This was the first time the second generation of Rothwell cousins got together. There were lots of discussion about their relationships and we got it sorted who were 1st cousins, 2nd cousins and 1st cousins once removed.

Once you can visualise it, it is very easy, you just need to think about who is the shared relative and are you the same generation.

1st cousins share a grandparent, 2nd cousins share a great grandparent and 3rd cousins share a great great grandparent ....

The removes come in when you a share a relative, but are not the same generation, for instance my cousin's children are my 1st cousins once removed because my grandparents are their great grandparents; each generation difference is one removed.

Is that at all clear? When I was researching it I found a very clear table somewhere.
