House on the Hill (right)
journaling:
I spent every summer of my childhood in the car, riding to and from southern West Virginia and my grandparents’ house. I was fascinated by the old, gabled house in Hillsville, Virginia and would look for it every year. Imagine my delight when just last summer (2012) I found a box of old negatives and photos that had been taken by my parents sometime in the 1940’s, well before my time! The photo over to the left was taken by them, the ones above are from an internet search. It turns out the house has quite a colorful past! Built in 1911, it was designed by
Sidna Allen and his wife. Sidna Allen was a member of the so-called "Allen Clan" that was involved in the notorious Hillsville Massacre of 1912
in which several people, including Carrol County officials and Judge Thornton Massie were shot and killed in the Carroll County courtroom.
