Spring Glow, left
These photos are from several springs ago - 2008 for the leaves, 2009 for the seeds & tree. I thought the photos contained most of the colors in the challenge - loved those palettes! Thanks for the stimulus to get the pictures scrapped. Product details are in EXIF.
Journaling:
The first maple leaves to emerge are often red; the expected spring green appears later, as chlorophyll overpowers anthocyanins. Some leaves even push out through bark on the trunk. As leaves develop, the fertilized blooms produce clusters of winged sides, called keys or samaras. The colors of the seeds vary, from the soft peach of the silver maples through the deep rose of the red maples. In the right light, the trees glow. Other trees also produce samaras. The round pink and green seeds belong to an elm, most likely the slippery elm. They have hairy edges that diffuse light, producing a faint halo around each seed.
