These two panels flank the large page, and are visible when the page is opened. DH wanted ALL of his photos of the frenzied mob included - he got part of his wish.

The text for the left panel reads:

Hundreds of parakeets and parrots gather daily. They begin to assemble, high in the trees, at about 10 AM, high above the ground, loudly negotiating who’s going first. Because this clay lick is at ground level, predators also visit. The birds can take hours to summon the nerve to fly down to the forest floor. Gradually, the mob shifts downward through the trees, a branch or two at a time, until eventually one or two birds take the plunge. Soon all are crowded on the ground, waiting a turn to enter a small cave and scoop up some clay, which has minerals that neutralize toxins in the high-protein tree nuts, an important part of their diet.

At this blind, most of the birds are Cobalt-winged Parakeets, but a few Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlets frequent the site, and one Orange-cheeked Parrot strutted calmly among the melee.

And then, all at once, they disperse, until the next day.
