SCRAP 10 - MEMORY KEEPING CHALLENGE - INTERVIEW
It is a good thing I went back to write down what I wrote. I found many mistakes. There are probably more but I think I will let it pass. One of the girls requested that I post the journaling in the description. I must say, I did get carried away! lol I took this to heart because I want to do a scrapbook of my life. There is so much to say, and this is a fraction of it. So, here goes!
When I was a child, I loved twirling a baton. I could spend hours tossing it in the air and strutting around like a majorette. Hopscotch was another big time thing when I as a child. We would play for hours and argue whether or not someone got "outside the lines."
Some of my favorite memories of my childhood are the wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen. My mother was a wonderful cook, and the holidays were no exception. She would start weeks in advance making fruit cakes. They were the best! Mother make divinity candy and fudge every year. We loved licking the bowls! She would prepare a number of Christmas tins with her treats for friends and family.
During the summer months, mother would teach my sister and me new skills. One year she taught us how to embroidery. She purchased pillowcases and my sister and I would spend hours embroidering. She tried to teach me how to crochet, but I didn't take to crocheting. In hindsight I wish I had learned to crochet. I loved to read and Nancy Drew mysteries were some of my favorite books.
Once school was out we would visit my grandparents for part of the summer. I loved my grandparents, but it could be difficult understanding them. They only spoke French and I did not understand a word of French. There was a lot of hand gesturing. I did learn what "fermer la porte" meant: it meant shut the door. It was not hard to learn that lesson because I heard those words and the frustration behind them several times a day. I learned a lot while visiting my grandparents. For one thing, I learned milk came from cows and not from a bottle brought by the milkman.
My grandparents lived in Opelousas, Louisiana, and my cousins lived also lived there. I spent a lot of time visiting them. We had wonderful times together. My older cousin enjoyed telling ghost stories which would terrify us and keep me from sleeping. We enjoyed going down to the swimming pool during the long hot summers, and taking long walks downtown. Going to the soda shop for a coke float or malt was a favorite pastime.
Entering my teen years, mother decided my sister and I should have piano lessons. I enjoyed learning the piano, but not the one hour a day practice sessions she insisted upon. Also, my music teacher would tap out the beat as I was playing, and if I made a mistake she would rap my fingers with the ruler. I told mother I was through with music lessons. My music teacher apologized and told mother she was hard on me because I had so much potential and she was trying to bring it out. It didn't work. I quit music lessons.
Church was a big part of my life growing up. I loved Vacation Bible School. My favorite year was when we made baskets. Basket weaving is a skill I wish I had delved into more deeply. I sang in the church choir, and did solos during services.
During junior high school I was voted the sweetheart of Istrouma Junior High. It was during this time I began noticing boys. My parents would not let me date, so my sister got me out of the house by taking me along on her date. My date was on the floor of the back seat. That was my first real date. My official first date, the one my parents knew about, was a young man who had to have me home by 9:00 p.m. sharp! I later became engaged to him, but broke it off to marry someone else.
During high school I belonged to the usual clubs, but music class was where I found my true calling. I tried out and was accepted into the acapella choir. We traveled to other districts to compete, and we were state champions my senior year. I loved my music teacher. I recall her telling me I was just like her. I had champagne taste on a beer bottle budget.
Sewing was another passion I developed during my teens. I loved making clothes in home economics. My mother made most of my clothes when I was younger, and I guess I got that gene. It was a hobby I pursued once I had a ittle girl of my own. I made the dress Susie is wearing in the photo on this page.
