Here’s my layout about Childhood Pets!
Journaling Reads:
"As a little kids we had goldfish and even little turtles back when they sold them as pets. Mom waited until we were old enough to care for them ourselves and I would stick my hand in the water, gently pick up the fish and put it in a bowl so their tank could be cleaned. We lived in a second floor apartment so Mom said it wasn’t fair to have a dog since they wouldn't have easy access to the backyard. But, my sister desperately wanted a dog and each birthday/christmas would put that first on her list. Mom bought her plenty of stuffed and little battery moving ones, but that did not suffice, since as an adult she’s always had a dog or two or more, along with cats! She DID actually get a cat when I started High School when she saved a kitten from being teased by children. It was named “EOCH”, our High School's nickname and Mom never understood how she agreed to it. But, she felt sorry for "the poor little thing" in a weak moment said yes.
The REAL family pet story is the gerbil. We were all shopping in a department store one Saturday when I saw the cutest little things in the pet department. I brought Mom over begging to have a gerbil, but she wanted nothing to do with a rodent, nor one in her house. But I must have nagged long enough because she finally said “Go ask Daddy”, (who was sitting in the car) — something she NEVER said. In a moment of brilliance, I said to Dad, “Mommy said we could have a gerbil if you say it’s ok”. Poor Dad said, “She said it’s ok?” and when I assured him she did, agreed. I will never forget the look of shock on Mom’s face when I went back and reported, “Daddy said it's ok”. She answered, “Well, then he has to come in and get it", but she gave in and helped us buy a gerbil, cage and all the accoutrements. We named him “Stubby” after Dad’s childhood dog since it had a stubbed, crooked tail and was a boy and Dad was the only boy in our family.
We loved holding and playing with Stubby and watching him run on his exercise wheel. Six mornings later, I looked in the cage and wondered what little pink toy Stubby was playing with. I stared and stared and then - oh NO! The story goes I said, “Mom, you’re going to be really mad, you’re not going to like this, Mom you’re going to be really upset, you’re not going to be happy, but I think that gerbil JUST HAD BABIES!!!” And, SHE had - three of them! But, even Mom admitted later how wonderful it was watching Stubby taking care of the babies and seeing them grow from tiny pink to little furry babies and one day seeing their eyes open! We were then able to hold them and Stubby didn’t mind so they were very tame. When they were old enough, two went to friends and we kept “Cookie”. My sister would put her on her shoulder and Cookie would walk all the way around from one side to another. We had loads of fun with those gerbils, except for the few times they got loose, which Mom did NOT like. My Dad caught it once and then we found if we left the cage open on the floor with some food inside, they’d come home themselves."
