Tuesday Oct 6 2015 NL Challenge "BC Touch Life"
Journaling reads:
“When I think about how Breast Cancer has touched my life I see it in a much wider spectrum. Yes, I know many people who have experienced this disease in all its many colors and not always pretty pink. But, what really comes to me each October is a true gratefulness to be living in this time I do now.
My Mom often spoke of her Mom who as a young wife and mother in the 1920’s would agonize over all the young women - many with babies and little children - who died of unknown causes, lamenting, “There HAS to be a reason”. Many years later my Mom noted that Breast Cancer most surely was one of those reasons and how Grandma would be so thrilled to see the advances made in its prevention and cure.
Almost 5 years ago I was diagnosed with a uterine cancer which thanks to a very early find required no other treatment beyond surgery and now frequent and faithful checks. Along the way there were complications, notably a leg nerve damaged in surgery that still isn’t right. But somehow my thinking has always been, “I’m glad to be living in a time when a leg nerve can be injured by top-notch surgery, early detection and cure”. I actually came out of my biopsy anesthesia a bit teary thinking, “My Grandma would be so happy to know I live in a time when my cancer could be found so early and be treatable”.
So each October, while I honor all the many brave women who have experienced Breast Cancer, I also remember all those early and tragic deaths my Grandma agonized over and how their families and succeeding generations fought the fight for Women’s Cancers to come “out of the closet” and be extensively researched. These early pioneers have made possible earlier detection, more treatment options and survival rates previously unimagined, thus ensuring that as a woman today I am more educated and better equipped to be proactive in my health and life.
My Grandma would be so happy.”
