Building an Igloo

These pictures are from our trip to Churchill. I needed two pages to illustrate the building process! Dave (DH) doesn't look too happy coming out of the finished igloo. He helped build; I watched from the bus. The supplies are listed in EXIF. And the shovel really was red! Thanks for a challenge that prompted me to get started on the gazillion pictures Dave took. Next goal - the northern lights.

The journaling reads: On our third day in Churchill, we went to the Northern Research Centre for lunch and a lesson in igloo construction. Our guide, Daniel, had tools ready for cutting snow blocks, and showed those brave enough to freeze their hands how to put the layers together, use a machete to shape the joints, and seal them with snow.

The igloo is finished from the inside out - the builder lowers the top slab into place, then cuts his way out. All participants had a chance to crawl in and crawl out!

So interesting and wow - gottat be brave to be inside that closed igloo and then cut yourself out. Great journaling and photos, Jo.

How interesting - I never knew the igloo was built from the inside. Great colors for a frigid outing and I love your series of photos of your dh.
