World Tour Layout #10 - Japan
Journaling: "In 2001 I climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan with a few friends. Before we began, we each bought walking sticks, and along the way there were stations where our sticks would be stamped with the current elevation. You can see different parts of my stick to the right, with the year and some of the different elevations in feet or meters. Toward the top, we needed to buy individual oxygen canisters; we could walk only a few feet before stopping to puff on the canister. Mt. Fuji is 12,388 feet high, or 3,775.8 meters. It was sunset when we reached the top, and growing cold, so we only stayed for a while. We had been warned it would be hard to descend the mountain in the dark. We made it down much faster, though, as the way up was by a switchback narrow trail, while the way down was a much more direct, wide path covered in gravel."
"This top photo is of me on top of Mt. Fuji. It was sunset, and you can see the formidable shadow of the mountain behind me, and the cloud cover below. The lower photo shows me with a few of the friends I climbed with, good friends from my Japan days: Donna, Cathy, and Michele. Michele and Donna were F-16 fighter pilots, while Cathy is a social worker. Great friends, experiences, and memories!"
