My mother was named after Ellen Morris Pierce and always would have this picture of the young Ellen on her bedroom wall no matter where we lived. When Ellen Morris Pierce was born on May 15, 1841, her father, Richard, was 29, and her mother, Elinor, was 25.
In 1852 the family sailed to America and settled in Adams Valley, La Crosse, Wisconsin. At the age of 23, in 1864, she married a fellow Welsh immigrant, John Edward Williams. They had seven children in 16 years, one of whom, Mary, is my maternal grandmother. Ellen died on March 21, 1928, in Bangor, Wisconsin, at the age of 86, and was buried there.
Ellen was known to keep an open and friendly home which became a gathering place for Pierce and Williams relatives. One of the draws was Ellen’s great skill in the kitchen and as was recorded in one family history, “The meals served in this home have become a part of the memories in the lives of those who visited there.”
