Buttermilk Biscuits

This isn't strictly an Easter recipe...but we make these for pretty much all of our holiday meals! I usually use a soft red wheat flour but pretty much any flour would work and with the folding, they always come out layered and fluffy! Used: ABL_Cloverfield Collection Mini

I love wheat flour and baked goods, but never heard of soft or red - intriguing.  Your recipe sounds good and your card is so pretty.

I guess because we grow wheat on our farm, that I'm more of a flour nerd ?.  Hard white or red wheats have more protein and are better for bread or pizza (things that use yeast), while soft wheats are better for pancakes, biscuits, pie crusts (things that use baking powder or soda).  But an all purpose or bread flour would work just fine for this recipe!

No, thanks for the info - I'm interested and it's very interesting to know and learn!   I've just never seen soft wheats.   I've learned something now! :)

Pretty card with the border - love the bee. Brings memories of grandmother making biscuits. The discussion here also reminded me of living in Kansas, my dad a county extension agent, listening to the market report on price of hard red winter wheat and soft wheat. Makes me want to try your recipe.

That's awesome!  Yes, we grow hard white, hard red and soft red wheat varieties.  Some older heritage types.  Lots of fun to play around with different types and taste the different flavors.  Do you have one of your grandmother's biscuit cutters?  I enjoy using my grandma's cutter when I make them. ❤️

Oh, how I wish I had her biscuit cutter; she used it every day. I was in college when she died. My brother and I got scolded when we were at her house for breakfast. We would eat as many as she would make, dripping in butter and honey. She just kept making them  - baked in a big iron skillet. I so enjoy your collections - our son is now a farmer/cattleman; they fit so many of the things we do.

Have you done a recipe card for her biscuits?  I'd love to try them!  I have a cast iron skillet and I've never tried using it for biscuits.  My husband used to be a cattleman...still have his branding iron sitting by the fireplace but wheat doesn't push down the fences, lol.

Sadly, it never occurred to the young me, that Grandma wouldn't be around to give me the recipe when I started a home. She always said her recipes changed every time she made something. Don't think that was the case with the biscuits.

I'm enjoying the discussion about wheat and the stories as well. This card is so beautiful; I love all the flowers on it.
@BetC an anecdote for you and Angela: my neighbor and I used to make pickles and jam together and she was so sorry she didn't have her deceased aunt's recipe for pepper relish. I guess she complained to enough people that some woman called her and said she had known the aunt and had been given the recipe. So... happy ending! I hope you are able to find your grandmother's recipe!

Oh, what a great story!  We don't realize how special recipes can be to our families.  Sometimes it's the actual taste of the dish and how much we love it... sometimes it's the memory of family or loved ones that the dish brings back, huh?  What a special gift the lady gave to your neighbor!

I have enjoyed this conversation, all so true!  @Molczan do you grow the wheat for harvest to sell rather than just for personal consumption?

This is a beautiful card.  Biscuits have never been an easy thing for me-they usually turn out heavy!

Yes, we have been growing for bakeries and noodle makers.  But we have just changed up our packaging and are working on a website so that we can sell 5lb bags to end consumers and home bakers too.
