Text: For a birthday present I was allowed to choose a place to visit for a day and to bring a one or two friends with me. For my 18th birthday I chose The Calico Mines in the Mojave desert of Southern California to visit. I chose my boyfriend Michael, who I had been 'going steady' with for eight months. In 1958 the town of Calico was completely deserted with only a few visitors occasionally. The road was a dirt track and very rough. Mike had a car that had been lowered, typical of hot rods of that time On this dirt road there were some places we had to all get out of the car to raise it up and also to clear rocks out of the way. I had been there before and Mother and I had explored some of the mines. We took Mike exploring in some of the mines. There was one that went all the way through the mountain. We had a wonderful time. Little did we know this was the start of over 63 years of exploring together! For over 63 years now we have continued to explore old towns, mines, caves, hike mountains, backpack and camp in the desert. We are now older, a lot older, and have hair that has turned white. We can't hike as far or carry as heavy a pack. And our old bones don’t like sleeping on the ground any more either. But we still continue to hike and enjoy the great outdoors. A recent hike was along the Deschutes River Canyon in Central Oregon. We hiked into the canyon to Folley Meadow. A lush green area with a serene river flowing along side it.

This is so beautiful in so many ways, Lynne and thanks for typing your journaling out so it's easy to read.   What a special story and it's funny, as I was reading it I was thinking oh, how cool that you were going on nature adventures as a teen - not realizing that your "friend" would be your husband of today!   Your photos are gorgeous and I loved seeing you then and now.   I really like the soft background you chose and the color you typed in.    Your simple embellishments really enhance your page without taking away from your story.   This is so very special and you did an awesome job creating it.

What a wonderful story! It made my day. I love the photos and the way the string carries across the two pages. The soft cactus background is perfect, too. A super special page!

I loved reading your story and how cool that you two have been together since teenagers. That's so cool. What a gift. I love seeing the old and new pictures - the rope connecting the two pages is super - as are your bright colors. This really drew me in and I wanted to read every word! Nicely done.
