Text:

When I was eleven for my Christmas present I received my dearest wish. A kitty cat. I had been wanting a kitty for years. In the Fall of 1951 my folks bought our first house. For the first time ever I had my own room! I was thrilled. I loved my brother, but I wanted more privacy. I also wanted a kitty! We had a place to have one. We were now living in our own home and it was not in the city. The parents were very non committal. I had started to give up any hope. Then on Christmas morning we were all in the living room around the Christmas tree when from down the hall I heard a meow! I hollered "A kitty!" and took off to the back of the house. I didn't find the kitty. He was hiding. I was then told the history of my new present. He was a smoked Persian 5-6 months old and his name was Nibbons. He was a rescue from the pound. His neighbor had called animal control on her next door neighbor to say the man had left his cat locked in the garage and had been gone for over a week without anyone coming over to feed or check on it. The cat was starving and had been physically abused. He was promptly taken into custody. The pound had had him for several weeks and had given up any hope of finding him a home. He was very anti-social and not friendly at all. Along came my folks and my mother fell in love with him. She knew I would have the patience and commitment to tame him. Nibbons was put in my room and I had a litter box under the bed. He would not come out if anyone was around so I spent all my free time half under the bed talking to him and trying to touch him. Every time I did touch him I was scratched. At school my nickname was 'The Mercurochrome Kid.' My arms were covered with scratches which had been dosed with Mercurochrome and were very orange splotched! It was months before there was any success. One night I woke up and Nibbons was on the bed with me. After that he slept on the bed with me almost every night. He was still not willing to be touched. After that he would get on the bed in the daytime and I would talk to him. After awhile he would come to me and rub against me. Soon I was able to scratch under his chin. Progress was being made. I have no idea how long all this took, just that it was months. Nibbons eventually became a loving kitty, but only to women! He hated most men. He tolerated my Dad and brother, as long as they didn't come near him. If they walked too close, out would come a paw and an ankle would be swiped. My Dad was slightly afraid of him and was careful to give him a wide berth. Nibbons was very protective of his yard. He chased other cats and all dogs out of the yard. I once saw him take on a German Shepard and chase him down the street. In 1953 Nibbons brought home a fluffy gray cat. I looked out the door and he was sharing his food with her. After several days of sharing his food and looking after the stray Mother said I could keep her. I named her, what else? Fluffy becam pregrant and since Nibbons had been neutered so we knew the kittens were not his. After the kittens were born we found her and her babies another home, but I kept one of the kittens. An orange tabby. I named her Butterscotch. The two were best friends for several years. Unfortunately in 1956 Butterscotch was hit by a car and didn't survive.

Wow, what wonderful journaling and I enjoyed reading the story of Nibbons  Your photos are awesome, so cool that you have all those pics of your kitties.   I really like the soft background and minimal embellishments you used, this is really lovely.
