Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

 

I really wanted to give this layout lots of dimension, so after applying Cheryl Barber’s Chipboard layer style to most of my elements, I used Filter-Render-Lighting Effects and Outer Glow layer style (both default settings in PSE) to them. This gave the “moon” a very realistic feel and the sparkle trail across the layout really looks magical. An outer glow under the text path also allowed my text to stand out against the varying dark/light background.
