Anorexia Nervosa in the elderly

After it became clear dad could no longer be trusted to live alone due to the eating disorder, he moved in with me. Only recently has the medical world realized that Anorexia Nervosa is rampant in the elderly. Unlike a teenager living with parents, they live alone so they can lie about how much their eating (which dad did) and they can blame numerous other medical problems for it (which dad did).

Dad is sane and rational in all areas of his life other than food. Then he's a raving lunatic. He keeps two scales in his bathroom in case one is high. The sight of food disgusts him so when I bring him food he takes the napkin and covers it up so he doesn't have to see it (while he lets it sit there for hours and hours). One night I served him spaghetti, a bread stick and a fruit cup. He ate the fruit and two bites of spaghetti then said he had had enough. We had a huge fight and I snapped this picture of him in the hopes it would embarrass him into eating. It did not. He still has to feed himself via the stomach tube with cans of liquid supplement. He won't unless I stand there and watch, which makes him furious, as in the fourth picture. Even if I do, after he's done he simply goes into the bathroom and drains it right out of the tube. This is why most anorexics don't get feeding tubes, it's pointless if they won't keep the food in.

This brought tears to my eyes. I just ache for you, and for your dad, trying to control something. :( Many hugs and prayers for you.

Very moving layout. Thank you for sharing this.

(Incidentally, what is the font/stamp set you used for the title? I love it. It's perfect for this layout.)

There is nothing worse than watching your parents go through horrible challenges like this. I am so sorry. I have spoken with so many older people who feel that not eating is the only way that they have any control over their life. . . and death. My poor mom slowly lost the ability to swallow and wasted away to literally skin and bones before she died, the only blessing there was that the Alzheimer's had taken any rational thought. My prayers are with you and my heart aches for you.

Thank you for sharing this, Lori. I did not know that Anorexia Nervosa can develop in the elderly - and that it is rampant. Your layout is so well done - the journaling and photos tell the story in a powerful way. I'm so sorry you are going through this heartbreaking situation. I'll be hoping and praying for things to get better for your dad.

Lori, thank you from my heart for sharing this LO with us. I am so sorry this is occuring in your family's life. I had a friend pass away recently from this very difficult disease. It was a long, emotional road for her and those of us who loved her. My single consolation is that she is with God and her suffering has ended.

I wish there were words to tell you how much I feel for you and wish I had a magic wand to "fix" your Dad.

My heart goes out to you & your family.

Lori, this is a very powerful LO. I worked for 4+ years in a treatment center for girls and women with EDs. It is a very tiring, lonesome road for all involved no matter the age of the patient. My heart goes out to you and your family. Thanks for being angry enough to make this page and post it. I'm praying for you and your dad.

Wow, what a powerful story your layout shows. I'm so sorry you are going through this with your dad. So sad he feels he has to do this. I'm sorry too that you are having to parent him because of it. HUGS and prayers for you both!
