Thanks for the help in sorting this problem out. I tried to simplify the layer with the butterfly brushes, and it smeared the layer just like saving to jpg had. So I ended up removing the Unique style and just applying a simple shadow and bevel instead. It isn't quite as nice, but this way it saved fine and has the effect I was looking for.
