Night Blooming Cereus 2008
This is the first layout I have done since "Mischief Week". For some reason today I felt inspired. These flowers are so very lovely. Every year I take way too many photos of them.

Note about the flowers (added later) - this type of Night Blooming Cereus is also called "Deer Horn Cactus", "Queen of the Night", and "Queen of the Desert". This is a rare cactus because they are frequently cut down by people who don't know what they are and because they are largely "invisible". Unless this cactus is in bloom it truly looks like a dead stick. All of the cacti in an area will usually bloom on the same night around the Summer Solstice - one night, once a year. (This year they bloomed very early.) The blooms start opening just before sunset. They are in full bloom from midnight until just after sunrise. By about 8:00 am the flowers are closing up and the flower stalks are wilting.
