The origin of the Name "Tejas" - which became Texas - came from the Caddo Indians whose tribes meant "those who are friends"

Thus our state motto is Friendship.

Our State bird - Mocking bird

State Flower - Bluebonnet

State Mammal - Longhorn

The Alamo is one of our most visited attractions each year - while we did not win our independence from Mexico during this battle, it was site of

one of the most famous battles and a Mission.

The "Hook Um Horns" Symbol is for the University of Texas - And, If you live in Texas you either root for UT or A & M on Game Days.

And, you put your your pinkie and your first finger up, cross your thumb over your other fingers, and you wave that hand proudly in the

air if you attended or just care about this great University.

Texas is the ONLY State that can proudly raise it's flag to the same height as the US flag.

That is because we were our own country before becoming a State - and Actually we are a Republic....

And, Texas school children proudly say the Texas pledge of allegiance right after the US pledge of allegiance -

Honor the Texas Flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and Indivisible!

And, I am a descendant of the original 16 families that were given land grants by King Felipe V of Spain to found Texas in 1731..

Each birth is registered by and documented by the Canary Island Descendants Association, and as we are invited to participate in several

annual events documenting the founding of the City of San Antonio, and the Laying of the Corner stone of the San Fernando Cathedral.

My ancestor was Juan Leal Goraz the first mayor of the city of San Antonio.

What a great layout Debilou! I've lived in San Antonio for 14 years now and my DD did an assignment on the Canary Islands cemetery and I still didn't know most of what you wrote about San Antonio. What a great heritage you have!

This is a great ATC, Debi. I love the "flag" look and the fact that it looks like a stamp. Great information too.
