Shadow Tips:
To get realistic shadows in Photoshop, I first apply a standard drop shadow to a layer (Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow). I commonly use a distance and size of about 7 px and a medium gray color. I then put the shadow on its own layer using Layer>Layer Style>Create layer. Putting the shadow on its own layer allows more detailed editing.
With the shadow layer selected, using Edit>Transform>Warp, you can ‘bend’ a shadow, making an item look like it is curling up off the page (like the wheat and fern leaves on this layout). You move things by grabbing any of the intersecting lines/corners and dragging them.
For items like the small date tag, the shadow cast on the frame would be smaller that the shadow cast into the chicken wire area. To make this adjustment, with the tag’s shadow layer selected, I ctrl+clicked on the thumbnail of the frame layer, to highlight that portion of the shadow on the frame and nudged it to the left using Ctrl+(left arrow key).
