Mission: Earth Hour
I participated in tonight's Earth Hour, and felt like scrapping about my experience. The picture is one I took of the candlelight reflecting on my bathroom countertop during the "blackout". To create the grunged photo effect, I used PSP's blending modes to combine my picture with the dark brown grunge paper from Erica Hite's "Just the Basics Paper Biggie"

The MISSION:
Turn off all lights and electronics for one hour, beginning at 8:30pm.
The Results:
At first I didn’t think I could survive a whole hour in the dark without any electronics. At any point in time, I usually have a computer, TV, CD player, or radio turned on. But when I heard about Earth Hour, I figured I’d give it a try. By 8:30pm, all my electronics and lights were turned off, and candles were lit: 2 in the bedroom, 1 in the bathroom. I warned Holly about this challenge, just so she wouldn’t think I was crazy for sitting in a dark bedroom. She didn’t seem too keen on the idea, but much to my surprise, she did turn off all the apartment lights except for the ones in her bedroom.
I kept busy during the hour by doing simple things: clearing off my bed so I have a place to sleep, browsing through some sales ads by flashlight, cuddling and petting my cat Noelle, and playing with my camera trying to get good pictures of the candles. I even spent a few peaceful minutes laying on my bed, staring at the flickering candlelight on my ceiling, and thinking about nothing in particular. The hour flew by! Not once did I miss the TV or computer. What a surprise!
I don’t know if my hour-long efforts made much difference in saving the world (or putting a dent in my electric bill), but it did provide a much needed peaceful reprise from an otherwise fast-paced, technology-filled life.
