Pont d'Avignon



This bridge was built in the 12th century, and destroyed in 1226. It was rebuilt and damaged several times by the waters of the Rhone, and the struggle was finally abandoned in 1660. Today 4 out of 22 arches survive. I'm sure we have all heard the song about the bridge, the first verse of which is on the layout.

That's one of the only songs I remember from my French class in HS! Thanks for the visual and history of the bridge. Love your Avignon series. Someday I'll get there, I hope.
