AMA Assignment #3: Memories 2009

LOL, this page started life as a nighttime photo of a ferris wheel (it's hidden in the June paper scrap) taken at a favorite amusement park. I love playing with the filters! You mentioned a roller coaster, but the ferris wheel analogy worked perfectly for me for 2009; it started on a high note, went down throughout the year and then back up by the end of the year. Anyway, it was a fun theme and layout on which to work.

I never paper scrapped and discovered digi-scrapping in late July, so still need to learn a lot about composition. Hit me with some CC- is it considered "unbalanced" because the year numbers are on the left and nothing on the right? Also, how would the rule of thirds work in a busy layout like this? Or, any other advice? TIA!

What a fantastic layout! I love the whole ferris wheel idea. It looks great in your background. And I really like the little strips of paper with the highlights for each month. What a creative way to approach the assignment!

To answer your questions - First, I didn't feel like the layout was unbalanced with the date on the left side. It didn't distract me from the main part of the layout, so I think it's fine. Second, the most important part of the rule of thirds is that you don't want your focus to be dead center on a page. With your journaling strips going in a circle like they are, I think they are fine. Not every layout has to be clearly divided into thirds.

A little CC - The thing that struck me that you might want to think about is the flow (flow is the order that you want someone to look page elements in). It wasn't clear to me whether you wanted people to start with December and go counter clockwise or with January and go clockwise. It is more natural for people to start reading/looking in the top left corner of a page (we learn to read that way, so it's pretty ingrained in us), but it felt kind of awkward to be going through the year backwards. It took me a minute of looking to find the January tag and then another minute to start going clockwise around the page. I would suggest that you give a visual clue as to where you want someone to start looking (maybe a larger embellishment or something for that one) or redistribute the journaling strips so that January is at the top center of the page, not equal with December. That would make so that your journaling strips wouldn't line up, so it might be more effort than it's worth.

Really, I like the whole layout, and I don't know know that I would make too many changes to this layout - maybe just keep the idea of flow in mind for next time. Decide what element you want people to see/read first, second, third, etc. and then make sure that it's clear.

I LOVE that advice! Thank you so much. It makes great sense to me that I should arrange the flow of the journaling in the way you describe. I did think that I wanted it to go in the direction of a ferris wheel, top to bottom and forward (right) but just because I know that doesn't mean that anyone else would, and now looking at it after reading your advice it really does make me want to read it on the left side first. I will change it and will think about what I want people to see first, as you said. This CC is really what I need and I appreciate the time you took to help!

that's a cool metaphor, i love the ferris wheel photo!

and as for composition, maybe you can consider repeating the 2009 on the other side? that was it is balanced and it reinforces the year. i don't think it would be too repetitive. or maybe if you don't want to go that route, you can always move the whole layout to the right, taking out the scalloped edge on the right side and enlarging the one on the left. that would give you one-third of the layout as the scalloped edge with the 2009 title, and two-thirds your journaling and ferris wheel photo. then you can keep the balanced feel while still looking good. :) of course, those are just opinions. ;)

Another really good idea! I think early on I had it divided that way, didn't like that it was hiding a paper I liked which ultimately didn't show anyway, and never went back to the original version. So, I agree that the one sided scalloped edge would work well. I think I liked that paua shell style so much that I just wanted to (over)use it in my excitement :hit-head-with-hammer: Thanks so much for the advice and taking the time. This CC is really what I need!
