Corrie ten Boom

I chose Corrie ten Boom as my hero. I read her story in The Hiding Place in my teens, but what struck me the most was a story from her later book, Tramp for the Lord. On a teaching tour through Germany, she shook hands with a line of people waiting to meet her after her talk. She looked up to realize that standing before her was one of the cruelest guards from the concentration camp where her sister had died during their imprisonment. She wrote that she was not honestly sure for a moment that she would be able to forgive him, much less to reach out and shake his hand. She prayed, and then reached out. "For a long moment we grasped each other's hands, the former guard and the former prisoner. I had never known God's love as intensely as I did then."

Corrie ten Boom is my hero not only because of her courage in sheltering the Jews, but because she was truly able to forgive an enemy.
