Hammocks - Important in the Amazon
We learned that hammocks are very important in the Amazon. Many people, including our guide on this riverboat cruise, sleep in them all the time. There are no roads between the cities, so when they travel from one city to another it is usually by boat, such as the one pictured here, headed from Santarem to Manaus, a three day trip. Your fare entitles you to your meals and two hooks on which to hang your hammock. If you can afford to fly, you still need to take your hammock with you, as you will need it to sleep in at your friend or relative's house. I have included photos of our guide, who is a physical therapist, showing us how she sleeps in her hammock. The main reason is because mattresses do not fare well in the high humidity where few people have air conditioning.
