Coloring with SG papers
lindarobin replied to lindarobin's topic in Printables/Hybrid: questions & tips
Hi, Kelly! Thanks for asking. The first thing I do is duplicate the coloring page so I can extract the black outline. I like to add a bevel style to it, then use this as the finishing touch on top of my coloring. Next thing is to fix broken outlines by drawing lines to close the gaps. The gaps are easily found by dumping paint on the outer white area, with contiguous checked. Where the color seeps into the picture, you will find the open gap. Undo the paint dump before you fix the gaps. The actual "coloring with papers" is working with layers. Method A: "Erase to Reveal" Layer patterned paper under the coloring page. Delete sections of white on the coloring page to reveal the paper underneath. Merge layers. Repeat from step 1. Method B: "Create clipping masks" Dump a primary color into sections of white on coloring page. Use the magic wand selection tool (do not check contiguous) to select all of that color. Copy. Add a new layer and Paste into Selection. This is your clipping mask. Clip a patterned paper to the mask. Merge. Repeat from step 1, using a different primary color. If you wish to change the color (hue, saturation, levels) of the patterned paper, do it before you merge layers. Method B is a little more work, but it allows you to easily recreate a clipping mask (from those different primary colors) should you later wish to redo a section with a different paper. -

Four years ago, I did my first adult coloring using digital papers. Found it exhausting, rather than relaxing! However, quarantined at home, I decided to give it another go, and improve my technique. I finished an 11x17 poster. I'm going to do a couple more posters, and then get them printed all at the same time. It's hard to see any detail when I upload my full poster in the gallery so I cropped out a square of it so the zoomed-in image can show the textures.

This is an adult coloring page that I colored with digital papers. I'm showing just the top right side zoomed in so the textures can be seen. The page's actual print size is 11x17. Background papers are usually more muted so as not to overpower our photos, but since I wanted the colors to really pop on my poster, I did a lot of color saturation. I was asked to share my technique. That can be found here:

I used the Pumpkin Soup color palette with my favorite photo from my son's sunflower farm trip.

The standing joke at my house is that you can't ask me to make that soup we had last week because the ingredients will be whatever is in the refridgerator that needs to be used up.

Hi, Marilyn! Thanks for all your wonderful comments. Yes, Staples did a great job on the printing. However, I found out the hard way that it is NOT a good idea to send them a JPG. Their automated system does a convoluted conversion and you end up with super big white margins, meaning your picture comes out much smaller than anticipated. To avoid this, create a PDF in the desired paper stock size ie. 11x17 or 8.5x14 or 8.5x11. So if you want to print your square layout as big as possible on 11x17, don`t send a square JPG! Send a 11x17 PDF that looks like this and specify print as best fit. They need to shrink it just a bit because they can`t print to the edge. When you trim off the white edges, your print is about 10.75x10.75 inches for less than $1 on regular weight paper, 50 cents more for card stock.

I am very happy with my poster that I had printed on 11x17 glossy card stock, at Staples. Amazingly, it's only $2. Only when you go bigger than 11x17 does the price really jump. I also posted the top half and the bottom half, zoomed in so the blend mode detail can be seen. They did a fantastic job with the printing. Very sharp; great color.

Applied blend mode Difference on DBH_requiem_bg11.jpg. This created a lovely stamped effect on the white areas. I erased some of it so as not to overpower the photo. I turned the photo into a black & white, but used SDE_Hygge_Brush12.png as a photo mask to keep a "stamp" of color on the couple and some of the background. See top half in detail. See bottom half in detail.

This was really challenging. I used my most recent acquisition, an elegant Halloween kit (Requiem Collection), to make a pet page.
