Belle, the potatoes take about 1/2 hour to cook while the cabbage takes just a couple of minutes (it all depends on how small the pieces are). Mashing the potatoes is easier when they're the only thing you're mashing (if the cabbage was in the same pot, you would be mashing the potatoes and squishing the cabbage). And the leeks cooked in milk give a wonderful flavor to the milk. Some folks like to saute the cabbage or the leeks in a bit of oil, so there's lots of ways to cook the individual parts. Whatever works best for your taste buds - this is a very adaptable recipe. We often have it on St Patrick's Day, but my favorite time is Fall/Winter when it's cold outside.

Mom's 90th Birthday Celebration
Images added to a gallery album owned by CelticLady in Members' Galleries
We plan to have easels set up with poster boards showing Mom's life each decade. We want to showcase her family, friends, hobbies, interests in momentous occasions and daily life. -

Mom loves hot fudge. The ice cream is just an excuse for more hot fudge, right? -

This was one of Mom's favorite puzzles - The Auction. A 500 piece puzzle with a price sticker of 59 cents! She had to have purchased it in the 40's or 50's. She probably did it at least once every year, and every time, we kids were fascinated with all the activity in the picture. -
