The beaches were empty and the water was nice and warm. The boardwalk would still be open & the rides were all running. We would visit for four days, that seemed to be our limit (and Mom-Mom’s too). This was the year Alex was 9 months old. We all remember it as the summer Alex would NOT sleep at all. Dad tried driving her around the block at 4am until she fell asleep. He was afraid he was going to get pulled over by the cops for casing the neighborhood because he would slowly circle the block over & over again. Alex would wake up screaming. We tried all the usually things, but nothing kept her quiet. It may have been that noisy pack-n-play, who knows. We do know that nobody got much sleep while we were there. During the day however, it was great! The adults were a bit tired, but the kids didn’t seem to mind. Jacki REALLY enjoyed having the cousins there. Pop-Pop would bring the kite, we would build castles, look for shells and eat grapes at the beach. We all miss those beach house days [but not the sleepless nights]! – September 1997–

You were 4 & Alex was 2. Dad was traveling LOTS. He always seemed to be away when things like this happened. I was having a hard time trying to put Alex down for a nap [as usual]. I finally got her down and you came bouncing up to me “Mom, I’m Blue!” My first thought was that I should probably scold you. But I couldn’t help myself. I was rather tired and I just started laughing. I couldn’t stop. I grabbed the camera thinking Dad has got to see this, because he is not going to believe me. You were pretending to be Blue [as in Blue’s Clues] and you wanted to look like him. You got the washable [thank goodness] markers and colored your face, lips, arms and legs without looking into a mirror. You did a rather good job getting complete coverage around your face. I think it must have been a brand new marker! Your shirt got a bit blue too, but it washed out ok. You were so proud of yourself! We had a good laugh about it and put you in the tub. The bath water instantly turned a lovely shade of blue. Alex amazingly never woke from her nap during all of this. You returned to your normal skin color and never tried anything like this again. Alex, on the other hand, gave herself marker chicken pox one time.

You can make a quick card with today's freebie! I plan to frame this and gave it to my mom instead. That way she can hang on to it a little longer. I've been wanting to use these photos forever. She never actually bit into that hot pepper, but I got the shot! Maybe not as little as these photos, but the following summer. You were incredibly gently around the plants. In the greenhouse you were actually a big help watering the “low down” plants. You did a perfect job and didn’t over water the seedlings. I wonder if this early training is why you are such a foodie these days! NOW if only you would help out in the garden as much as you did back then.

I have come to expect Alex to run outside as soon as it starts raining. It's great that something SO simple brings her such joy.
