Photos taken by then 6 year old Thomas. Journaling reads: My parents have always had a swing in the yard. This isn't the one that was there when I was growing up, and the tree this one was in has since fallen. My dad and brothers had a knack for putting swings in the most daring places. They had to swing out over a creek bed for maximum height. Had fun with it as a kid, but it took a while to get used to as a mother. "Hold on Tight!" Charlotte, Michael and Linda take turns swinging. Okay, here's the journaling challenge. Journaling reads: "This photo was taken of my family at my parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary Party on December 29th 2006. We were relieved that Mom had made it to this milestone. Their anniversary was November 22nd, but they postponed the party since Mom needed a 2nd surgery for brain cancer. When they finally decided on the weekend after Christmas, most of the remaining flights were either booked or very expensive. I found that by extending my stay, I could save hundreds of dollars. At the party, I was surprised to see how swollen my mother's face and ankles were. She put all the family photo albums back together with new photo corners so the pictures were under their correct captions for the party. She also added captions to photos that hadn't had them. She scanned and printed a copy for each kid. She also wrote each child a letter telling how much she cared for us. After the party, Mom continued doing family history on the computer with her feet propped up on a chair. While Mom and I worked side by side on our computers those extra days I was there, she showed me the program outline she'd written for her funeral—adding that "it may be another 5 years," but she wanted me to know where it was. When it was time for me come back to Oregon, she insisted on going with us to the Burbank Airport. She sat in the back seat so she could keep her feet elevated, but I think that it hurt her back. She switched to the front when I got out and she gave me a big hug. As I walked through the airport doors, an overwhelming feeling washed over me. I knew that was the last time I would see my mother. I resisted the urge to turn and run back. I knew they would be driving away. I made a quick trip home, even changing flights on the way- needing to get back to the comfort of my own family. So, while this photo isn't the best (none of them turned out any better) it was the last time our family was all together. Mom thoroughly enjoyed the party. There was lots of great food, as well as friends and relatives we hadn't seen in years. Four weeks later, at her funeral, the same people were there again... So glad she had that party and a chance to see and talk with many of her dear friends before she went. I try to focus on the positives. She was prepared to leave. She hardly suffered, and didn't have to endure the later stages of cancer. She lived 16 months after the diagnosis. If you didn't know, you probably couldn't have told she was ill. Her positive attitude was contagious, and she regularly joked with her doctors: "No one gets out of this world alive." She traveled to Chile to attend the re-dedication of the temple they were supervising the remodel of when she was diagnosed. She and my Dad also went to Hawaii with Bob and I- celebrating our 20th and their 50th anniversaries. She checked off quite a few things on her list of "things to do before I die." While I miss her, I find solace in the blessings and am confident I will see her again." I know it is long, but it is suppposed to be about the journaling, right?
