[FONT=Geneva][COLOR=purple]Hello, I am new to the messageboard. However, I have been scrapbooking for some time now. I have also been noticing on scrapbooking shows and magazines that people are using all kinds of materials in scrapbooks now. It's not just the stuff you find in the local scrapbook stores anymore. I am just wondering if anyone knows if there is a list floating somewhere on the net somewhere that list safe scrapbooking materials. Like are Gel Pens safe to use? What types of paints, etc. I have been using traditional scrapbooking paper, stickers, templates, etc. I am just getting a little bored with the traditional things and I am looking for a new and interesting way to scrapbook. Don't get me wrong I will always use the traditional items, I just want to spice things up a bit. Any comments or hint would be appreciated. Thanks. :D

You probably already know this, but sometimes they mention a spray you can buy to remove acid from some things. Scrapbooking or craft stores should have it. As for commercial items like pens or paints, how about contacting the maker of the product themselves? They should be able to tell you if it's acid free. I have just started with the digital scapping, but have TONS of stuff for paper scrapping. Now if I could purchase enough time to do it all! lol This is a fun and infomative place to hang. Leslie

I suppose it depends on whether or not you are a purist as far as 'safe scrapping' is concerned. I am aware that there are some who take things to the extreme and wear protective gloves when handling everything in their albums and others who use anything and everything just because they like it regardless of its properties. Somewhere along that scale you'll probably find yourself!!

As a very general guide if a product has 'non toxic' on its labelling, its usually safe to use (generic glue sticks and most gel pens for example have this on them). If it isn't made of wood, it won't have lignin in it so thats one less thing to worry about!

To answer your question, I don't know any one site that contains a list of safe products - perhaps we couls make that place ScrapGirls!!!

If you are drawn to using new stuff in your designs, just go for it. The most important thing about this craft IMHO is that you enjoy what you do.

I would love to be apart of putting together a "Safe Scrapbooking Material List" (or Perhaps a better name) webpage as a part of scrapgirls website.

that's the good thing about digital photos - it's easy to keep a copy so that if something gets ruined, you still have it. I just got a digital camera for Christmas, and I find i use it almost all of the time.

Hi
Lynj from England. I have a Marvy Neutral7 penyou can just put a mark on stickers, textiles, etc wait a few seconds for the ink and paper to react, if the ink stasy blue then alkaline is present in the paper (this is considered acid free but not acceptable in paper longgevity terms) ig ink turns yellow then a high acid content is present The ideal colour for the ink to turn is a neutral green this is acid free and assures the papers longetivity. Marvy explaination not mine) Of course you have fun on blue yellow and green paper! But if the paper has a white back this will test fine. I have been abel to use some makes of present wrapping paper.

Thanks so much, that is a great tip. I will buy a pen like that. It would be very useful. I could use it on the free samples I got from my local printers. I read a tip somewhere on the net once to ask your local printer for their old sample books, that they would usually give them to you for free. Well, I did, and he gave me a HUGE book for free. There are so many beautiful things I would love to use. I just want to make sure they are safe first. Then pen sounds like the perfect thing for me.
Thanks again for the pen tip!

Question: I am just wondering if anyone knows if there is a list floating somewhere on the net somewhere that list safe scrapbooking materials.

Answer: just to let you know, most artist supplies have archival quality. That is the big difference between artist and student quality paints and papers. Most Canson artist materials are safe, paper and all. Of course you can always depend on the buffered papers if you use them between the questionable materials and your photos.

Some please let me know what Ro says about the safe scrapbooking list. I would be happy to help if needed. I would just love to see it. I think a list would help scrapbookers of all levels. And perhaps inspire them to try new techniques with a material they have not tried before.
