How To Use Actions?

Actually, actions only work in the full versions of Photoshop, not even in Elements 5.0.

Gail, if you email angie@scrapgirls.com and tell her that you bought the actions without realizing that they didn't work in PSE, she will get you all fixed up.

hey I have to pipe in here because you absolutely 100% CAN run actions in PSE4 and PSE5 (sometimes even PSE3).

You cannot record actions in PSE, they must be done in the full version of Photoshop BUT they can be written to run in Elements. I know because I have had lots installed in PSE4 when I used that and recently wrote a set that will fold and tie ribbons. I wrote them in Photoshop, tested in PSE4 and PSE5.

If you didn't get any installation instructions with it, here's what you do.

1. Close Photoshop Elements 4.0 if it is running

2. Open the following folder (typical path is shown, yours may vary slightly) c:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 4.0\Previews\Cache

There are two folders in the Cache folder: Effects Cache and Filters Cache. Delete the three files inside EACH of these folders.

3. Copy the entire folder included with your download into the following folder:

c:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 4.0\Previews\Effects

4. Restart Photoshop Elements.

Now, having said all that -- the product in the store IS a style set, not an action LOL.

They're easy to use as well --

just copy to this folder

/program files/adobe/photoshop elements/presets/styles

after you restart, it should be in your styles palette!

HAVE FUN

Thanks EVERYONE!

I love that when I ask a dumbish question I always get answers and learn something!

I was able to use my sanded edges on this layout I just posted...

(not sure how to link, but maybe that will take you to it...)

Thanks again everyone!

Grateful Gail

Okay, I've finally unzipped the file and figured out that, in addition to the ABR file, there's an ATN file, which I assume is the action file. (I'm trying to install SS Tools: Actions Stitching 4901 on PSE 5.0.) Unfortunately, I cannot find the Preview folder anywhere in my computer. I've run searches for "effects," "cache," and "previews" and found various things, but not anything resembling this path. The only ATN files I can find on my system are in the Required folder for PSE, which I'm not planning to empty (!) and doesn't have a Previews folder.

Am I just out of luck or missing something?

Thanks!

actions are named with an .atn extension

I have NO IDEA why but when Adobe put out PSE 5.0, they changed where actions are installed...

here are the 5.0 instructions~

HOW TO INSTALL THE ACTIONS: PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 5.0

(Instructions for Windows XP)

1. Close Photoshop Elements 5.0 if it is running

2. Open Windows Explorer (click on the Start menu/button and then My Documents)

3. Click on “Tools” in menu of the My Documents window that has opened and choose “Folder Options”

4. Click on the “View” tab

5. Below the second folder icon, click on the radio button that says “Show Hidden Files and Folders” and then OK

6. Using the open window, navigate to the following path:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\Special Effects\

7. Copy the action into the folder named in step 6.

8. Restart Photoshop Elements 5.0

Hi christineS

I have in the past seen some wonderfull Actions in the Boutique, then had to contact Angie, because I could not load them in PSE5, and Angie came to my rescue. What I would like to know is, the instruction for loading actions into PSE5, would they work with Vista, do you know. I can't try it myself as I have no action at the moment, but there is that wonderfull sale on and I feel a spend coming on. LOL x

here's my guess -- YES, LOL.

I think the only potential issue is getting at those hidden folders - not sure if you would access them the same in Vista or not.

same instructions for Vista yes... here are the notes I had when I did it (and I got that here from the MB ;) :

Go to My Computer/C: click ALT T, that gives you a menu>click on view>check box to show hidden files.

from there the path is the same as for XP

I used it and it worked...HTH :D

Thanks, Christine, I'll try that!

Jennifer, did you ever get it to work? Just curious, I mistakenly bought the same thing and haven't been able to get it to work. I can get the styles to work, but not the actions.

Thanks,

Well, I got it loaded and PSE doesn't give me any error messages when it opens, but I truly don't see what it does when I try to apply it. I'm hoping to keep working with it in different modes/sizes/opacities, but for now I won't be buying any more actions until I figure this out. (It's very possible it's user error on my part, since I'm an inexperienced PSE user.)

If you get any more suggestions, please pass them along!
