Hi, I'm a newbie and I am trying to add a photo curl to one of my pics (just playing around and practicing) and it doesn't really look natural to me. Is there a trick to this? Do I add a drop shadow? I have it on a mat too and maybe I shouldn't. I don't know. Any help would certainly be appreciated. I am using PSE 5.0.
Thanks, Sue.

Hi Sue (Welcome to Scrap Girls, by the way!)

Can you post a picture of what you have? That might help with answers. Are you using a particular product that you could name?

Hi Jennifer, I posted the pic and the photo curl I used is TKA_SS_EmbTmp_FancyFolds3_PhotoCurlSPEC_CutOut.

I hope this helps.
Thanks, Sue.

I've used that one before, Sue, on this layout in the bottom picture.

Let me play with it and see if I can give you any tips. Just a quick thought - are you using all of the layers?

Cute LO!! What do you mean by all of the layers? Probably not.

I had a quick look at the curl to remind myself, and it doesn't look like you've added the curl layer itself - that's the piece with the white curl, the clear button, and the shadow all as integral pieces. Did you get the both pieces in your download (the curl and the cutout)?

Yes I did but I only used the one element. I guess I should have used all of it. Ooops, sorry. But I'm still not sure how to apply to my lo. Is there a tutorial on that?

There isn't (as far as I know), but if you get one of the Fancy Folds Templates that have Folded Corners, Off-Center Folds, etc... Theresa has written very detailed instructions. I suspect there wasn't room to have that with a freebie download.

Simply put, you layer the two elements on each other in a new document, making sure you line up the sides to match each other. (In some programs, if you hold down the shift key while you drag them to the new document they'll align automatically, but that sadly doesn't seem to work with PSE5.) Then, you bring your photo into the document. Highlight the cutout layer (control-click on its thumbnail in the layer palette). Then, move to your photo layer and press delete. That should delete everything on your photo that corresponds to the cutout. I then remove the cutout layer since it's just taking up space. Make sure the photo is under the curl layer so that shows up. Link the photo and curl layers so they move together, and you're done.

I hope that helps!

I just reread what I wrote and realized that I should have said, now you're done with your photo and can pull it into your layout!

Thanks Jennifer. I will work on that later on and let you know how it goes and post another pic.

Please let me know. If my explanation hasn't helped, I'm sure you could PM Theresa and get the official version.

PM me if you want the paper fold instructions. These work just like the paper folds, but there are less layers. With the freebie you should have gotten the cut out and the actual "curl" with the shadow already there. Just move that layer so that it lines up with the angle on the cut out.

Let me know if you need more help!

Thanks Jennifer & Theresa, I haven't had a chance to play with it again but I will give it another try in a couple of hours. Busy cooking dinner right now. Sue.
P.S. What does PM mean?

Private Message. Just click on someone's user name and a drop-down arrow appears. In the menu you'll see the option to send them a message. Choose that. It's sort of like email only it only passes through the board system. You aren't actually emailing them. The next time they come to the message board, the PM pops up so that they know they have a PM to read.
