Old Photo Help

I found a baby picture for the member challenge. I scanned it and it is all grainy and pixellated. Is there a not-too-hard way to correct this in PSE5? If I reduce the ppi in the image size it looks better. Will it look 'inferior' on my lo if I just reduce the ppi?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

were you able to scan it at 300 dpi (ppi) ?? also, make sure your scanner isnt dusty, or the photo. The first time i scanned mine, i had dust on the photo...

im sure someone who knows pse will come soon and help you through that method.

Yes it scanned at a default 300 dpi. It isn't dust--this is just uniform grain all over.

I sometimes scan at an even higher resolution and get finer results. Depends on the original and the size. I often scan at 600 and the results are noticeable, but not on everything. Sorry to sound to vague. But I just try lots of different things unti I like it. And I'm not afraid of huge files. :) I don't keep them that way forever.

Make sure you save all photos as .jpg

and never as .gif once they scaned.

Try running a couple of filters over it to see if there is any improvement:

Filter > Noise > Reduce Noise

Filter > Noise > Despeckle

You can also try

Enhance > Unsharp Mask and then play with the setting to get a look that removes much of the speckling.

I usually use a combination of Reduce Noise and Unsharp Mask on my heritage photos before turning to the Healing Brush to get rid of major blemishes.

You can also try taking a digital picture of the picture & try fixing it that way if it is still pixilated..Is that a word?

Okay, here is what worked (just in case someone else pops in with the same problem!) I adjusted the scan to 800 dpi and that didn't seem to do what I wanted. It helped, but not enough. I think it was that horrible finish on the photo--kind of a fine pebbly matte finish. I then tried the filters on my high res scan. The filter that worked was the Dust & Scratch filter. It was amazing! Thank you to all for your input and help. These challenges have forced me to learn faster than I would have by just scrapping when I got an inspiration.

Here is the link to my baby photo, just in case you want to see how it turned out....

Ooooohhhhh . . . I didn't even think to tell you that those pebbly finish photos come out grainy. I tried scanning one of my DS's school photos that used that finish and it ended up looking as if it were 50 years old because of all the noise.
