For example, if you are wanting to use Adjustment Layer masks...they are fantastic and quite powerful when you are making adjustments (like color, contrast, levels, etc...) to the underlying layer(s). Or...are you just using a regular layer masks to create (for example) a fade-out border or something like that??? It's hard to answer your question without understanding your objective.
