My DH and I are working on a donated art piece for a charity: the Laguna de Santa Rosa, a natural area we live in that needs to be preserved. Each year, the Laguna Society hosts a summer event where artists donate a piece to be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Laguna. It's very popular and the party is fun. This year I thought it would be great to do some work in Photoshop and have it printed onto marble tiles. Then DH is supposed to build a table and set the tiles into the table. (i'll keep you posted on that part, lol)

I just got the tiles and they look so cool!

I took the background photo during the spring when the mustard was in bloom. Then I drew the Blue Heron in Illustrator and tossed it into Photoshop, where I applied different photos, all taken in the Laguna; to construct the bird. I designed the piece to fit onto the tiles: exactly where the image would be split up. I opted for the natural marble tiles with the tumbled edges.

There are lots of applications for this technique. You could accent your kitchen backsplash, do a bathroom with pictures of the kids swimming, make a table, even mini pages as Trivets, one to a tile. Since Christmas is coming up, I thought I'd share this cool technique as a way to turn your creations into something ceramic!

The company is Pacifica Tile Art and you can google them.

That looks stunning Valerie! Do the tiles need to be sealed again or is the printing permanent/sealed already?

One question tho' V, how do you print on the tiles?
Pacifica Tile Art did it. It was $160. for these 8 tiles. Not cheap, but then, it'll make a great table---and the folks we are hoping will buy this table to be auctioned are wealthy, very wealthy wine country folks with disposable income. So we have to give them something cool. And it'll last ages and ages.

Do the tiles need to be sealed again or is the printing permanent/sealed already?
Pacifica Tile recommended a clear sealer for outdoor useage and as UV protection.

Very cool! Our Lowe's had an patio set where they table was just the base and you got to pick the 12 X12 tiles to go in it. These would look really cool on that!

They're absolutely beautiful V. The whole idea is just inspired. Thank you for sharing, I wonder if I can find somewhere here that will do that sort of printing for me. I need an outdoor table and like the idea of it. I hope that it raises lots of money for your land preservation which is a very worthy cause.

This idea is so wonderful!! It has inspired a lot of ideas in my head, lol. I too am thinking of
some projects where the idea of print, apply, and seal would work really great. Thanks for sharing this idea with us.

The auction was held the day before we left on vacation, the table sold for $525. I have photos somewhere, but DH waited until auction day to finish and deliver the table so i never got a chance to get a good photo of it. (typical of him). The event was fun and much money was raised for this charity.
