I Really Need Some Advice With This...

OK, I have a super personal question to ask ALL of you. Remember the days when our parents snapped pictures of us all naked? We all thought it was so cute to have these photos...well suffice it to say, I have MANY of my girls.

My husband has told me that I need to get rid of all of them. Because of the day and age, if HEAVEN FORBID someone would get permission to come into our home and check our computer, we could be arrested for having pictures of naked children!

I am TORN over this, because I NEVER want to even THROW AWAY any photos of my kids, naked or not. I understand his point, but at the same time, who has the right to tell ANY of us how we can photograph our children? Granted, since they are 5 now, I wouldn't plan on taking any more...but the other photos are when they were toddlers? Do they have to go?

What would YOU do...what WILL you do?

What do you think??

Gosh Theresa that is a hard one. I guess I never really thought about it, I like most people have nakid pictures of my boys. I plan on keeping mine. My thought is the number of other photos that I have WAY outnumber the few "nakid" shots I have and I think most people would understand that they are my kids and they are just cutsey shots. But like you, my boys are now 3 I don't know of an instance that I would take anymore like that.

I know that wasn't any help to you...but now you've got me thinking!

There has always been a fine line between pornography and art. Would the Louvre ever get rid of Michangelo's David? Do I need to get rid of Ben's first tub bath video? I think not.

While I might go through and get rid of any that shows any "no-no private" spots, I would definately keep those standard naked baby laying on their belly on a rug type shots or shots where the private where obscured.

If you have any shots that you just don't want to get rid of and the no-no spots are in clear view, maybe using the blurring tool might help? Or maybe crop in on their faces?

I think it's a sad thing when people start getting weird about something that's as natural as giving birth. If God had an issue with it, those babies would come out of you with clothes on!

Keep your nekid baby pictures, and stand proud.

If for some LONG SHOT REASON, someone would ever need to check out your computer, then I'm sure they could tell those photos were taken by a mom who loves her kids, not some perv out to do evil. There's a BIG difference!

I don't have kids yet, but I'll keep mine one day. I do agree with the above comments about number/tastefulness of the shots though - I would think that as long as they're just cute it wouldn't be a problem. I can see your husband's concerns though - you might do a little searching on the internet about the laws in your state and see if it has any guidelines or definitions of what would be pornographic and what not (I kind of doubt it, the law is kind of behind on this, but it's worth a try)

Ouchies. I just accidently deleted my post. :banghead: After reading this, I have to admit that I did call the police department here and ask if I had to destroy photos of my children having their first bath etc, and was told no. I do suggest though removing them from the computer, so that if someone was to hack into your computer they could not get to them and use them in a way that was not originally intended. It is a sad world we live in when people think of a baby photo having a first bath or being born as pornography. But that is the world we do live in in this day and age. I wouldn't destroy the photos, but I would take them off the computer.

Between 4 kids, I have quite a few nakey shots, too. I'm keeping mine. I do NOT advocate child porn in any way. But I refuse to pitch pictures of my kids doing what comes natural to most kids. Shoot, if these last two had their way, they'd probably run naked quite a bit, if I let them. Bath time used to really be interesting around here. haha Naked races all over the place!
I think Valerie's suggestion about removing them from the pc is probably a good idea, though. Heaven forbid if someone decided to be a butt (I'm being nice 'cause I have to here), and find a way to use them against you. Reality is, there are a few people messing things up for the rest of us who are just proud parents, trying to enjoy our children. They grow up too fast. You know what your photos mean!

I definitely think you should keep them. No police department will ever come to your door and say "I need to look through all your photos to see if there are any pornographic ones on there." And even if someone ever did look at them, I can't imagine where they are your child and the kids are younger that it would be viewed that way at all!

I have plenty of naked pics of my toddler too. It is part of being a toddler! He is 4 and still prefers to run around naked!!! Don't worry about it, no one will do/say anything. It is one thing to have them running around being kids and another to have them doing pornographic things. It is sad that you even have to worry about this or that your DH even thinks you need to destroy them!

I would never think of getting rid of any photos and there would have to be a real good reason for the police or anyone to look through my personal photos or my computer. Question ,Theresa, how did this even become a concern ( did your DH see something on the news about this or did someone tell him this?)

He claims that a couple was arrested after someone at Walmart or Target or something said they developed pictures of naked children. They took the kids and did a big investigation and it was mostly an annoyance, and an embarrasment...and my husband is VERY paranoid about alot of things...especially people getting access to computers..

Thanks for sharing that info. I wasn't being nosy just wondering what prompted all this for him. I also have that same type of DH . He does'nt trust a soul and thinks i'm way to trusting. Oh well, but I'm happy.Besides, I don't have much contact with others except by phone or puter due to the fact that he decided to move us from Ohio to NH. for a better life LOL . I can have a good life anywhere you plop me.He is a great hubby and father just a bit over protective.

A naked picture of your own child inside your own home taking a bath or getting dressed or whatever is NOT child pornography, and you have nothing to worry about.

A naked child posed in a sexual position might be. A naked child with a rubber dusky and wet head running around the house, streaking and making you laugh so hard you had to grab the camera? Not child pornography.

If some of them might be too much, crop them and destroy the other parts. But a naked infant or toddler or small child is an innocent thing, and nothing to be ashamed of.

And really, what lesson is that teaching your choldren? That their bodies are shameful and dirty? That even in their own homes, they must be covered at all times and they are not innocent in any way? Not sure you want to teach them that, you know?

wxchic - I believe DH is right about there being an arrest like that - it was on a Lifetime movie a while back and I believe it was based on a true story. But, I tend to think that was a rarety and if you're doing digital and keep them off your computer so they can't be hacked I would think you could avoid that. can't remember the name of that movie though - if it comes to me I'll post it . . .

Also, that case where the photo lab turned in the parents - I think it was REALLY wierd stuff going on. Like much older kids, sexual positions, drug paraphernalia in the background, etc. Like there was much more to it than infant bathtub time or toddler nudie-fest, running around with nothing more on than mommie's shoes and a blanket for a cape, you know?
