viperwife
Hi all - I'm looking to use the same size shape (usually circle) to crop multiple things out of the same picture. Or even different pictures, ie 4 close-up photos of flowers, trying to cut the same exact shape out of each. Do I create my shape with the marquee tool and then somehow save it? brandiev
Hi Lynn, What program do you use? If you are using PS or PSE, you can right click on the rectangular marquee and select elliptical marquee and then at the top of your tool bar there is a drop down menu that says "style" -- open that up and then pick "fixed size" -- then to the right you can enter in measurements for the size you want. Click on your document where you want the shape (you can also click and hold and move it around if it's not right where you want it) and the click "delete" on your keyboard and it will "punch" out the shape. I am pretty sure you can use this shape/size over and over again until you exit PS/PSE. I should say this is how it works for me in PSCS2, and I think it will work in PSE. There is also custom shapes, those can be used to punch out shapes, and PS/PSE comes with a circle shape, as well as others. We also sell lots of custom shapes at SG here: http://store.scrapgirls.com/category.php?cat=76 If you are interested in this method, let us know know if you need help. jennk
I didn't know that you could enter the measurements you wanted. Cool! Thanks for sharing!
brandiev
Cool! I'm glad this was useful! I should also add this exact measurement can be used with the rectangle marquee tool and the custom shapes...I use it all the time when I need something precise. brandiev
Lynn, I wanted to add that if you don't really want to "punch" out a shape, but rather would like your photo to be a certain shape, than this is done with clipping masks. You would need to create your shape -- create it on a transparent background, with the marquee tool, and fill it in with color with the paint bucket. Then place your photo on the layer above the shape, and if you are using PSE, I believe you click ctrl+g on your keyboard (make sure your photo layer is selected in the layer palette). I have PSCS2 and I do this by right clicking on the photo layer and selecting "create clipping mask". This will make your photo become the exact shape you create. This can also be done with the custom shapes I talked about earlier.
KBT
Great info Brandie! I knew about the exact measurements, but hadn't thought about using a clipping mask to do it another way! Thanks!
viperwife
I always forget to mention I'm on PSE 5.0 - I'm going to have to try both of these techniques - I've never really "gotten" the clipping mask thing and therefore have been hesitant to try it. My goal (no pun intended) is to punch holes out of a soccer ball at points where the black & white sections meet, and place kids' photos in the circles. So I was wanting the same size circle for about 12 punches. Thanks Brandie!!
