Photos Into Pse

A question on the message board got me to thinking about how I get my pictures into PSE. It made me start wondering if there was a better way. Here is what I currently do. Wondering if any of you have an easier way.

I currently have iPhoto 08 and just load my pictures in there and then separate them into events. I name each event but don't make albums, assign keywords, etc. When I find pics I want to scrap I just drag them to my desktop so I can find them easily. The iPhoto file structure has always baffled me. So, once I have dragged the photos to the desktop I can then browse with Bridge or just do file-open in PSE. I can easily find my pictures this way. How do the rest of you guys get your pics into PSE from iPhoto?

I have tried doing file-open from PSE and then click on pictures in the source list. I can then see my iPhoto libraries ( I have multiple libraries) but they are all grayed out. I can't open them. Then when I browse with Bridge I can again see the library but when I click on it it opens iPhoto. AHHH! Is there an easier way than what I am doing?

How do you guys use iPhoto with PSE?

Jenn,

Should be an easy fix... it's a Preferences thing.

In iPhoto, go to iPhoto > Preferences

under the General tab, it says "Edit Photos:"

in the pull down, click in Application

browse to the application you want the photo to open with

Thanks dinny. I did go and change the preferences thing. So, is that how you get your photos from iPhoto to PSE? Just find the ones you want and then click "edit" to get them into PSE? Sorry for the questions. The conversation from yesterday got me wondering if there was an easier way. This seems to cut back on a step or two! Thans again!

I posted this same question on the iPhoto support site at Apple. Did you know that you can ctrl click on a photo in iPhoto and then select show file and the photo's file path will pop right up with the photo already selected? You can then choose to open it with an application or whatever. Never knew that! Between that and dinny's advice I have learned a lot this morning and it isn't even 9:00 yet! Yeah for me :-)

isn't apple great! what a great tip.

My setup is more complicated... I shoot in RAW, but I basically find the photo I want, double click on it and it opens in Photoshop's Camera RAW.

I love iPhoto for organizing my photos. Have you set up Film Rolls?

Well, I think I have...film rolls that is.

On my old version of iPhoto I would import and then title that roll. I had roll after roll of my imports but I titled each one and then closed the roll so all the pics didn't show. With this new version you create events. From one roll, or import, I can create just one event, or multiple events. For instance, this past weekend I shot some pics at the beach but I also had photos from the kids' first day of school on the memory card. So, once I imported them I split the roll and named them appropriately- first day of school and Labor Day at Beach. Is that what you mean by creating rolls? I don't do albums typically. Usually the rolls created by importing are in a decent order for me.

The crazy thing is I can't access the rolls, or any part of my iPhoto library when I am in PSE. It is very frustrating. In PSE I go to file-open and can get to my library but it won't let me go further. It is grayed out and I can't click on it to go further. Strange. I would think I should be able to click on my library and then find the rolls as you describe. Any idea what is up with that?

I have an older version, and they called them film rolls. These "events" sound like they are even better! Guess I need to look into upgrading LOL! I only have one "Album" and I use that for my screen saver. It's really a great way to view a variety of your pics! If you haven't tried that, you should.

I am able to access my iPhoto photos from the Adobe Bridge here:

iPhoto Library > Originals > year > Film Roll

I would think that you should be able to follow that path to your photos also.

However, If you can't, maybe it changed in the upgrade.

Thanks Dinny! Something must have changed because I can't click on iPhoto Library from Bridge without iPhoto opening :-0 Now that I can just click a photo in iPhoto and get it to PSE I should be good though. I do like the new iPhoto ( except for that little quirk). The events (stacks) of photos are really cool and I love the new Web gallery feature. Thanks for your help!
